Basically, there are two types of minerals:
Macro-minerals are minerals that your body needs in larger amounts. This group of minerals is made up of calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, chloride, phosphorus and sulfur.
Micro-minerals, or trace minerals, are minerals that your body needs in smaller amounts. This group is made up of minerals like iron, zinc, iodine, selenium, copper, manganese, fluoride, chromium and molybdenum.
Your body needs nutrients everyday in order to maintain and produce new cells for skin, muscle, and bone. And although the list of important nutrients includes vitamins, protein and carbohydrates groups, it’s the mineral groups that are sometimes a forgotten category of important health supplements. Since your body does not make minerals, it’s important that you meet your daily needs of minerals through a well-balanced diet. One way to do this is by eating a variety of healthy foods from all five food groups:
- Lean meats
Aim to meet the minimum number of servings for each food group every day.
Selenium is an essential mineral that is needed by the human body in small amounts. Selenium is found in the soil and naturally appears in water and some foods. Selenium plays a key role in the metabolism because it’s an antioxidant that helps reduce oxidative stress by keeping free radical numbers in check.
